Chapter 3 Diagnosis of hypogonadism: symptoms, signs, tests, and guidelines

T. Hugh Jones

  • • Hypogonadism is a clinical syndrome complex that comprises symptoms ± signs as well as biochemical evidence of testosterone deficiency.
  • • The clinical presentation of hypogonadism depends on the age of onset and whether or not it is pre- or post-puberty.
  • • Symptoms of hypogonadism especially in older men are non-specific.
  • • The measurement of morning total testosterone is a good predictor of hypogonadism, except in borderline cases where free or bioavailable testosterone assessment can be more sensitive.
  • • Published guidelines have aided clinicians in the diagnosis of hypogonadism especially in the interpretation of testosterone levels.
